THEY have both had their fair share of controversies but this is what has helped them make it big in showbiz. With Mzansi Magic beefing up their line-up all the time, the SABC is under tremendous pressure to up its game.
The latest additions to help the public broadcaster to do this are Khanyi Mbau (30) and Somizi Mhlongo (43).
The socialites are known to inject drama to any dull situation they find themselves in and their presence at the SABC will delight viewers and listeners alike.
It’s true that when one door closes, another big one opens. Khanyi’s show, has been discontinued on e.tv but she now has a new show with Phat Joe.
METRO FM GIG
After speculations that the embattled SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng had imposed Khanyi and Somizi to Metro FM, rumours had it that the duo will be taking over the show recently left by Tbo Touch.
It’s alleged that things took a highway with some Metro FM staff showing displeasure about the claims. However, Khanyi tells Move! that it was not the way it had been rumoured.
Khanyi says that she was approached about being part of Metro FM. But nothing was finalised yet and she was still waiting to get feedback.
“I was approached by the station, but I am not sure where they want to place me. So I am still waiting for them ” she says.
KHANYI’S NEW SHOW
Khanyi is hosting a lifestyle TV show on SABC3 called The Weekend Edition with radio and TV personality, Phat Joe, on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
“I am grateful to be back at the SABC as this is where I got my big break through Muvhango and Soul City. This is a great opportunity for me to be part of the SABC talent, and it’s such an honour to be back,” says Khanyi.
About her show, Katch It With Khanyi, having being discontinued, the star says, “I have learnt a lot at e.tv as the host of my own talk show. That show opened doors for me and I feel that I have a lot to offer for the SABC audience. It is also an honour to work with Phat Joe as he is very experienced when it comes to TV projects.”
Khanyi is not just a TV presenter, she is also busy with her production company called Her Production, which is focusing on developing TV concepts.
“I do concepts for television productions, as this is my other skill. I have been running my company for four years and it is growing in leaps and bounds. I also want to discover new talent and help the local entertainment scene tio grow,” she said.
Khanyi says she is not having sex with men because she has no time for men, as she is busy focusing on her demanding career.
“I have no time for men. I’m busy working. I want to push hard to get to the top,” she said.
She is grateful of the friendship she has with Somizi, as they both share similar qualities.
Somizi on the other hand is making waves as a judge on Idols SA and he is also a master of ceremonies at major events across the country. Many praised him for saving the day at the recent South African Music Awards (SAMAs) where he kept the audiences entertained with his witty humour. He was the perfect host alongside Khanyi, Thando Thabethe and Phat Joe.
Somizi seems to be very happy about joining the SABC judging by Instagram account. He recently posted, “I’m joining SABC radio… here’s to growth.”
He also recently posted,” God favours me.”
Although Khanyi and Somizi have hectic schedules and they are separated from their former partners, they are both doting parents to their children. Khanyi is a mother to little Cannes, who is 10 years old.
Khanyi says, “I want to guide Cannes to stardom and to protect her from the cruelty of showbiz. If she really wants to be in the limelight, I will make sure that I hold her hand every step of the way.”
Khanyi also says she does think of her ex-husband Mandla Mthembu and wishes he was around to see Cannes growing up.
“My daughter asks me about Mandla and tells me that she would like to see him. I tell her that her father will come one day to see her when the time is right. However, everything happens for a reason and I hope wherever Mandla is, he is doing well,” she said.
Somizi has a beautiful daughter, Bahumi, who is 21 years old, with actress Palesa Mocuminyane. This glamourous star is also a responsible father who wants nothing but the best for his daughter.
