Hollywood has its usual suspects of openly gay and proud celebrities like Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres, but here is a list of 25 stars you might not have known were gay.
Even though much has changed over the years with the ruling on same sex marriage, coming out as being gay or bise’xual can still be quite frightening due to all the criticism from people, friends, and family who don’t support the LGBT community. But imagine being a celebrity and disclosing your se’xual orientation to the world and not really knowing how your fans will react, that has to be even more difficult.
#1. Michael Stipe
REM’s frontman was often asked if he was gay or bisexual and he never commented. But in 2008, he finally revealed he is gay and said, “Now I recognize that for public figures to be very open about their s’exuality helps some kid somewhere.”

#2. Jodie Foster
Academy Award-winning Jodie Foster has had incredible success as an actress. She is a mother of two sons and has her own production company. Just last April, Foster married Alexandra Hedison.
#3. Wentworth Miller
This ‘Prison Break’ star denied he was gay in 2007, but then publicly revealed he was gay in 2013. He came out in a letter to the organizer of the St. Petersburg International film festival in Russia. Wentworth was invited to appear there as the guest of honor, but declined because of Russia’s recent anti-LGBT legislation.
He wrote, “Thank you for your kind invitation.As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline.
I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

Four-timeGrammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman is best known for her number one hit ‘Fast Car.’ During the mid 90’s, she had a relationship with author Alice Walker, which was kept a secret. The singer has always kept her personal life private, but she is a proud les’bian and an advocate for LGBT.

Canadian actor Victor Garber is famous for his role in the movie ‘Titanic.’ He’s tried to kept his personal life private for many years, but in 2012, Garber finally revealed that he is gay and living with his long time partner Ranier Andreesen.
#6. Melissa Etheridge
Etheridge came out publicly as a lesbian in January 1993 at the Triangle Ball, a celebration of President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration. This was a time when such a proclamation was still taboo. She has been a prominent gay rights advocate ever since.

Award-winning Ian McKellen has had a long successful career. He is best known for his role as Gandalf in ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ trilogies. He’s been living openly about being gay for along time. His only regret is that he’d didn’t come out publicly sooner.

Charming and very handsome Matt Bomer, the star of the USA Network series ‘White Collar,’ came out publicly in 2012. He also revealed that he has been married since 2011 to 50-year-old publicist Simon Halls. They couple has three sons together including a set of twins.

Meredith Baxter is best known for her role on the television series, ‘Family’ and ‘Family Ties.’ The actress has been married four times and has five children. In 2009, she came out on an interview on the Today show. After that, she married her girlfriend of seven years, Nancy Locke.

‘The Se’x And The City’ actress confirmed that she plays for both teams back in a 2012 interview with The Daily Beast. Nixon married education activist Christine Marinoni in 2012.

Lily from ‘The Princess Diaries’ and ‘The Princess Diaries 2’ has always been open that she was a les’bian. In 2008, Heather was engaged to musician named Carolyn Murphy. Shortly after, the engagement was called off. She has kept her personal life very private since.

In 2012, new anchor Anderson Cooper came out as gay after keeping his se’xuality private for years.
Cooper wrote an email that he allowed his friend to publish on the The Daily Beast website, “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be. And I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”
